Press Release- URGENT!

Community organizers respond to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano's announcement of new agreement for State and Local Immigration Enforcement Partnerships.

Advocates for Immigration reform and community leaders will hold a press conference against Napolitano’s announcement

Chicago IL, Saturday, July 11, 2009:

Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission and the Justice Mission will hold an urgent press conference today July 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in response to Napolitano’s announcement done yesterday regarding the New agreements of Section 287 (g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

“We have seen how the section 287 (g), since the time of enforcement and agreements, has been affecting working class immigrants and families. It has been the reason of thousands of separations of families; it has been an excuse to deport non-criminal immigrants.” Said Father Jose Landaverde, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission and the Justice mission are concern for the New agreements done under this Section 287 (g) by the State and Local law enforcement. “Under this agreement we have seen how civil rights violations occur and an example of it is Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.” Said Father Jose Landaverde.

Last week at Washington D.C. Advocates for Immigration reform presented Congressman Lipinski with an open letter stating the following;

Dear Congressman Lipinski

We know of your opposition to a full immigration reform who legalizes millions of undocumented immigrants. We know you believe that in opposing this regularization you think you are representing the opinion of your constituents. We think differently. And we know we are right because of the frequent and updated polls show that most people in the United States support immigration reform with legalization. Two months ago, an ABC News/Washington Post poll showed that 61% of the people of the United States supported “a program giving illegal immigrants now living in the United States the right to live here legally if they pay a fine and meet other requirements.”

Another poll, from CBS News/New York Times, conducted in April, asked if illegal immigrants who are currently working in the U.S. should (1) be allowed to stay in their jobs, and to eventually apply for US citizenship; (2) be allowed to stay in their jobs only as temporary guest workers, but not to apply for U.S. citizenship; or (3) be required to leave their jobs and leave the U.S.” Most people, 44%, said immigrants should stay and apply for citizenship, and 21% said they should stay as guest workers. We understand the many concerns about border security, but we also know that immigration is not closely related to drug dealing, terrorism or arms dealing, which are the real dangers to all of us. We believe you should change your views on immigration reform, because the people who elected you do not support your points of view. They know undocumented immigrants should be given the chance to regularize their status, pay a fine and stay, fully integrated to society.

As President Obama, Senators and Congressmen move towards immigration reform, we call you to support their efforts to change the law that has caused grief, deaths and, ultimately, repeated violations because it left millions of people with no other option. We are also your constituents, we live in your Districts and we pay taxes in the neighborhoods you represent. We want to be counted today, the way you counted on us on election nights. Support immigration reform with legalization, without punishing people who have already suffered enough because of a broken law.
